Importance of Zoos as Educational and conservation Medium

There are many successful training techniques that prove that practical examples are the best way to learn anything. When it comes to learning about wildlife and animals in general there is no better place than the zoos. Zoos are places where animals are kept in enclosures as exhibits for people. Typically you can see the animals and a placard that talks about the animal, its habitat and other details.

Zoos have been in existence for a long time. In the past they were mainly for the privileged class and mainly for the pleasure than any educational value. Over the years though people have found zoos to be a great way to conserve animals and help develop better knowledge and appreciation for the wildlife and their right to share this planet with us.

Through the early part of 19th century, zoos were created for conservation and education, but the style of displaying exhibits was still having them in cages. Many times the visitors without paying heed to the emotional state of the animal used to tease it and eventually, many zoo animals started showing behavior that they would not do in the wild typically.

Some animals started hurting themselves; other sharing the space with many individuals would fight unnaturally. This led to the evolution of the modern zoos where the animals were given their natural habitat recreations and much wider area to roam around. The benefit of this approach was people could actually see animals in their natural habitat.

Many zoos today are moving to this kind of exhibit display options. Of course, such format requires a lot of land which is why many animals are still kept in cages. But now these cages have a short enclosure where the animal can go and rest away from the visitors. While this may deprive the visitors a chance to view the animal, it does give the animal a chance to live a better life.

Most times the animals brought to the zoos are not fit to be returned to the wild. Most of them are either animals that have had bad accidents in the wild, or have been saved from poachers or rescued from abuse. This is why you may see many animals with deformities in the zoos. While they cannot take to the wild themselves, in the zoo they can create awareness about their specials and help save their wild relatives.

Many zoos in the world also undertake captive breeding programs, where full fit and healthy animals are protected and encouraged to reproduce. This is typically done for animals that are highly endangered in the wild. This is an important function for the zoo as these animals may not have sufficient population in the wild to sustain the species. Through captive breeding programs, healthy animals can be reproduced, trained and equipped for release in the wild. Many endangered species have benefited from this exercise.

Thus it is clear that zoos are very vital in conservation of wildlife. They are also great means of educating people especially the children about the nature and the importance of sustaining it.
